
Motorcycle piston kits are three different products sharing one name, and the search term does nothing to separate them. Working out which of the three you are buying is most of the job.
Motorcycle piston kits are three products under one name
The first is a standard replacement: the size the factory fitted, going back into an untouched barrel. The second is an oversize service piston, made for a barrel bored out to clean up wear. The third is a bore-up kit, which is not a repair at all but a deliberate change to how big the engine is.
All three are sold as piston kits, and only the first two keep the machine as it was built. A buyer who reads across from one to another orders a part that will not go in, or one that changes the engine in ways nobody warned them about.
This category sits under the engine group on our motorcycle parts page, and it is where the small Japanese and Thai singles are most often modified. In the 4Mini world displacement is close to being the identity of the machine, so this is not a fringe question.

Standard, oversize, or bigger
Work along the row that matches your job rather than your model. The fifth column is the one we cannot answer for you, and without it nothing can be priced.

The gudgeon pin is the dimension that decides fitment
A piston has to match the small end of the rod as well as the bore, and these engine families do not use a single pin size. Our own archive describes the tuning pistons for the Wave110 and Nice110 as running from 52.0mm to 65.0mm in bore, in flat and high-compression forms, with pin diameters of 13mm, 14mm and 15mm. The Monkey and Dax ranges have long been listed the same way, with high-compression pistons in more than one gudgeon-pin size.
Those are historical descriptions of what has been supplied, not a current specification and not a fitment claim. The point they make is that pin size is part of the order rather than something deduced from a model name. We settle the exact size when we quote.
It matters because the pin is a precision interface rather than a dowel. MS Motorservice, an engine-component manufacturer, explains in a technical note on seizure in the piston pin bosses that the bosses have no forced oil supply and depend on splash and centrifugal oil, and that too little clearance between pin and rod bush, misalignment, or a dry pin bed on assembly cause a seizure there. That is general engine practice and says nothing about any part we supply, but it is why nobody sensible guesses a pin size.

What a bore-up kit contains, and what it forces
There is no standard answer to what is in the box, and pages implying otherwise are guessing. Some kits are piston, rings, pin and clips. Some add the cylinder, some the head. Our CBR150R listing has always separated the standard cylinder head, crankshaft, cylinder and piston kit and an aftermarket connecting rod as individual items, which is the honest picture at this level of the trade: you buy components, not packages.
The same listing shows the split clearly enough. Standard piston kits appear at 63.5mm and 64.5mm, service oversizes for a rebored barrel, while the 162cc and 177cc bore-up kits carry forged pistons at 66mm and 69mm. One keeps the engine what it was; the other makes it something else.
A bore-up kit usually arrives with the gaskets suited to it; where you are not buying a kit, or the kit’s gaskets have already been through one build, sealing is ordered separately and our motorcycle gasket sets page covers it. A bigger bore also tends to want more air through the head, which is why a camshaft change is so often bought alongside one.
Displacement is a legal classification almost everywhere, so a bore-up can move the machine into a different class on paper as well as in fact. Check what that means where you live before you order, not after.

When you do not know what is inside the engine
A great many small Hondas have been through several owners and at least one workshop. The barrel may not be the one the machine left the factory with, and nobody kept a note. The model name is then close to useless, and a catalogue lookup will confidently return the wrong part.
The way through is measurement. Take the bore with a gauge, note anything stamped, and photograph the piston crown, the barrel and the top of the cases. Our page on identifying motorcycle parts from photographs explains how to send those so they are readable.

Questions we are asked about piston kits
Forged or cast — which should I have?
Neither is simply better. Forged pistons are the usual choice where a kit pushes the engine harder, and they behave differently when cold. Standard-type pistons are what service oversizes are normally made as, and suit an engine going back to how it was. Our archive follows exactly that division.
Can you tell me the bore from my model name?
Not reliably, and we will not pretend to. Bore belongs to the barrel in front of you, not to the badge on the tank, and on a modified engine the two have nothing to do with each other. Measure it, or send photographs.
Do I need the barrel as well as the piston?
If you are boring out the barrel you already have, no. If you are going up in capacity the barrel is usually part of it, since the existing one cannot always be opened far enough.
Getting a piston quotation
Send the engine number first, then the frame number, since engine parts are catalogued against the engine and a rebuilt machine carries two histories. Tell us the capacity now and the capacity wanted, the bore as measured, and the gudgeon-pin diameter if you know it. List anything already changed, a previous owner’s work included.
Photographs of the barrel, the piston crown and anything with numbers stamped on it save a great deal of back-and-forth, and a part number replaces most of it where you have one. Finish with the destination country and how many you want, then use the engine and performance quote form. We work in Thai Baht, and shipped parts cannot come back to Thailand, so precision now is worth the effort.
